Multiple NASCAR, IndyCar championship-winning spotter Bob Jeffrey dies

Bob Jeffrey, a longtime spotter in motorsports who worked in the NASCAR Cup Series and IndyCar, has unfortunately passed away.

FOX’s Bob Pockrass confirmed the news that Jeffrey passed on Thursday. During his time in the Cup Series, Jeffrey spotted for legendary wheelmen like Dale Jarrett and Tony Stewart, helping them become the best version of themselves on the track.

“Bob Jeffrey, who had spotted for Dale Jarrett and Tony Stewart and was working as spotter for IndyCar driver Pato O’Ward, died yesterday,” Pockrass shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. “He would always bring a smile to your face when you saw him and talked to him. RIP.”

As Pockrass noted, Jeffrey was working as the spotter for Pato O’Ward in IndyCar during his latest run as a spotter. He’ll be sorely missed in both worlds, as support has come from all sides in both series after his passing.

During his time in NASCAR, Jeffrey helped Jarrett win the Cup Series championship in 1999, and after joining Stewart in his new venture in Stewart-Haas Racing, Jeffrey assisted the driver in his quest for a title, as Stewart was able to best the field and win his second career championship in 2011.

Freddie Kraft, a fellow spotter who’s in Bubba Wallace’s ear each week, as well as a member of the NASCAR media, shared some sentiments on social media about Jeffrey, and how much he’ll be missed in the motorsports community.

“We lost of the best today. You never had a bad time with Bob Jeffrey. Always a smile on his face, and a story to tell. RIP Buddy,” Kraft posted on X, in the wake of the disheartening news.

It’s evident Bob Jeffrey is the standard to which most spotters will only dream of achieving throughout their time in NASCAR or IndyCar. He’ll be missed by his colleagues, and the prayers of the motorsports world are with his family and friends.
