Man tries to use rideshare to flee police in Greene County

DURHAM, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — A man is facing several charges after ordering a rideshare to try and flee police in Greene County. The incident started as a routine fishing compliance check.

On July 2, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officers saw a man and woman fishing along Catskill Creek in Durham and asked to see their fishing licenses. The woman was ticketed for not having a valid New York State fishing license. The man did not have ID, but provided his name and date of birth that came back to an active fishing license.

While trying to confirm the man’s identity, the DEC said the officers ran the license plate on a motorcycle in the parking lot and found that the plate was reported stolen to the Schodack Police Department and did not match the type of motorcycle there.

The officers contacted Schodack Police who said a man matching the description of the fisherman recently fled from them during a chase. The man had also violated the terms of his probation and had active bench warrants out of of Schodack and East Greenbush.

When the DEC officers returned to the creek, the man has fled on foot. With help from a Greene County Sheriff’s K-9 unit, they tracked the man through the woods to a waiting rideshare vehicle, said the DEC.

The man was taken into custody and brought to the New York State Police barracks in Greenville. He was charged with two counts of bail jumping, criminal impersonation, obstructing governmental administration, and fishing without a freshwater license.

The motorcycle was seized and the man was turned over to Schodack Police for his outstanding warrants. The Environmental Conservation officers were assisted by the New York State Police, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and Durham Police Department.
