(FOX40.COM) — A search is underway in Humboldt County after possible human bones were found in the southern portion of the county, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

On July 6, deputies went out to the South Fork of the Eel River near Redway for reports of bones being found in the area.

Redway is located in southern Humboldt County, about 220 miles northwest of Sacramento.

The county coroner’s office initially said that the bones were unlikely to be human after looking at photos from the scene.

After deputies collected the bones for further analysis, the coroner’s office determined it would be beneficial to have the bones examined by an anthropologist.

Examinations by the anthropologist concluded that the bones are “possibly human” and a more conclusive result will be made pending further examination, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators are now carrying out further searches in the area where the bones were initially discovered with the use of two cadaver search dogs.
