GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Two Mason County deputies and a state conservation officer are being praised for their quick work to help rescue a young bald eagle that had reportedly been hit by a vehicle.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office posted a dashboard camera video of the rescue to its Facebook page Thursday evening. It shows Deputy Ken Baum approach the injured bird on the side of the road and wrap it in a blanket.

A short time later, a Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officer arrives and uses thick animal-handling gloves to help pick up the bird. The eagle was taken to a rehabilitation center where they expect the bird to make a full recovery.

The sheriff’s office highlighted the overwhelming symbolism in a small act of sympathy.

“Take note (of) K9 Deputy Baum, a retired sergeant major in the United States Marine Corps, using an American icon blanket, Harley Davidson, for another American icon of freedom, the bald eagle,” the post read.
