“Man, I f****d that up. We had a chance to win that game, but I woke the beast up” – Kevin Garnett on firing Michael Jordan up with his trash talk

Youthful exuberance is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it can bring a refreshing energy and fearlessness to the game. On the other hand, it can also lead to reckless decisions and vulnerability. This was evident in a game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Chicago Bulls back in 1997. A young Kevin Garnett , who was only 19 and playing in his first season in the NBA, was eager to play in front of his hometown.

However, that eagerness turned into overconfidence as he decided to talk trash to the legendary Michael Jordan , known for his killer instinct on the court. Little did KG know that would awaken a competitive fire in Jordan that resulted in him scoring 35 points and leading the Bulls to a dominant victory.

    An emotional homecoming

As “The Big Ticket” narrated to Jeff Teague on the “Club 520 Podcast,” he was an emotional mess for the match-up against MJ and the Bulls at the United Center. He had just gotten off spending time with his former high school teammate and close friend, Ronnie Fields, who was in the hospital with a broken neck because of a car accident.

“I had just seen my friend who had gotten into a car accident, so I didn't really get much sleep. We were on a back-to-back, and when I landed, I went straight to the hospital. I sat there all night with him. It was hard seeing him in there with the halo on his neck,” the Hall of Famer shared .

Even with little sleep, KG said he was amped for the game and even took the first bus to the United Center to see a section of the arena filled with familiar faces.

“I was really affected when I came back to the hotel and had to go straight to the arena. I was on the first bus, super early, super inspired but running on fumes. I hadn't slept at all that night. I had the whole West Side on the whole left side of that motherf*****, so I felt like I was in it,” Garnett continued.

The joyous homecoming for the 7-foot power forward took an unexpected turn when he chose to taunt His Airness. With his teammate Isiah “JR” Rider having a terrific ballgame, KG celebrated a little too much, saying this within MJ’s earshot: “Keep killing that ni***. You’re having a good game, keep going!”

Suddenly, Jordan’s ears perked up, and he directed his attention to Garnett, his stone-cold gaze almost piercing through him.

“I had a great night, but just as I started feeling good, I messed it up,” Kevin admitted.

Knew he had made a grave mistake

While a veteran player would know better than to rile up MJ, the youthful Garnett needed the luxury of experience. But he soon learned the error of his ways as Jordan went on a scoring spree he had never seen before. While the game was close at the end of the third, with the Bulls up by only six, 82-76, it soon became a blowout as His Airness imposed his will on any defender Minnesota placed in front of him.

“There are a lot of things I've messed up, and that game was one of them. We had a chance to win that game, and I woke the beast up,” the 15-time All-Star said.

While he had heard of Air Jordan’s maniacal competitiveness, he hadn’t experienced it firsthand. However, that game changed everything for him. It was a grave mistake to underestimate Jordan’s determination and drive.

“I didn't think that sh*t was real until I saw it. He came down, simple two-dribble pull-up, three, five, and one, shot two free throws. I looked up, and he had like 40 in about 12 minutes. I was like, ‘Damn.’ We were sitting on the bench, down 19, and I looked at everybody, and they were all looking at me like, ‘I told you to shut up,’” KG uttered.

KG was a young pup back then who didn’t know any better than to poke the bear. But that game was a valuable lesson for him, one that he would never forget for the rest of his career.
