CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — A worldwide outage of the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike is striking Microsoft devices throughout Central Illinois, disrupting state, county and municipal systems.

In Champaign County, officials said on social media that the outage resulted in the Brookens Building being closed for the remainder of Friday. They said they hope to reopen the building on Monday.

Vermilion County officials reported no direct effects, but the County Treasurer said there was a slight issue with the banks and employee payroll. The City of Danville said only a small number of city systems use CrowdStrike and their issues have been resolved.

In Sangamon County, officials said public safety departments like the County Jail, Sheriff’s Office and court system had their outages resolved overnight. The Public Health Department, County Clerk, Supervisor of Assessments and Recorder of Deeds Office have also had their systems restored.

Staff from the County Information System are still working to address PCs affected by the outage, but officials said all county departments remain open and operational.

CrowdStrike confirmed that the outage was not the result of a security incident or cyber-attack, but a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows.

Normal operations in Sangamon County are expected to resume shortly.
