SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – An off-duty deputy stopped a burglary in process Thursday afternoon in Spartanburg County.

According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, a neighborhood watch member called to report suspicious activity near a house in the 100 block of Amber Drive.

An off-duty deputy arrived at the scene to investigate.

Once on scene, the deputy saw the suspect, later identified as Kaye Bradley Bertelsen, had entered a camper.

The deputy arrested Bertelsen and charged him with attempted burglary.

“This incident highlights the crucial role that neighborhood watch groups play in maintaining the safety and security of our communities,” said Sheriff Chuck Wright. “Their quick thinking and prompt reporting allowed our off-duty deputy to respond effectively and prevent a crime from occurring.”

The sheriff’s office is reminding the public of the importance of active neighborhood watch programs.
