Flash floods wash away bridge, displacing St. Charles County couple

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Cleanup continues after Tuesday’s widespread flash flooding, though not everyone is able to get back to their homes.

Floods washed away one bridge off of Valley Road in St. Charles County.

The bridge connects Austin and Rebekah Davis to their home. They say they isn’t the first time floods have washed away a bridge either.

It’s a sight that’s become all too real for Austin and Rebekah over the past two years.

What happens if Biden drops out of presidential race?

“The longer I look at it, the angrier I get,” said Austin.

The newly-weds bought their first home recently in St. Charles County, not knowing the nightmare they’d have to deal with.

This bridge to their home, at least what used to be a bridge, was washed away during Tuesday’s flooding. They say it’s happened about a dozen times now, forcing them to move back in with Rebekah’s parents.

“It’s heartbreaking. You just want to go home, and you can’t,” said Rebekah. “We’re 26 years old. We’re trying to have a family, and I can’t even bring a child home. It’s really heartbreaking.”

The couple say they were told flooding was not an issue when they bought the home. And it wasn’t, at first. But something changed.

They say the creek is taking on way more water than before. They’ve gone to the county, desperate for any kind of answers. And they say, they’re not alone.

“There’s no answers. It’s like, everything we try to do to fix the issue, doors slam in our face,” said Rebekah. “We’re trying everything we can to just go home.”

“Every time I come here and see the bridge, and the house I can’t get to, it feels hopeless,” said Austin. “I tried to fix it myself. But this is just too much for one man to try to fix.”

The Davisons say they want to get this issue fixed and sell their home. They love it in St. Charles County, but say they have too many bad memories now.

They still hope the county can help them fix this problem and get their lives back.

“Just to realize that this is an issue and people are being displaced from their homes, and it’s not fair and it’s not right. It needs to be addressed,” said Rebekah.
