Anthony Gordon urged to snub Liverpool transfer amid comparison to Man United star

Anthony Gordon has been advised to remain at Newcastle United this summer, even if the opportunity to move to Liverpool presents itself. The possibility was first floated as the Magpies struggled to meet financial rules ahead of the June 30 "deadline" .

That move came to nothing, with the Reds unwilling to include Jarell Quansah in any deal, and skeptical about Newcastle's valuation. Nevertheless, it's been claimed that Liverpool still holds an interest in a deal .

One thing that does seem to be agreed upon is that Gordon would still be keen on a move. It has emerged that he is a boyhood Liverpool fan, and despite his Everton links, he was enamored with the prospect of coming to Anfield when it was presented to him.

But there's little doubt that a transfer to Liverpool this summer would come as a surprise. It's not only that he's a former Everton player, but that he was at Goodison Park just 18 months ago.

If he were to move anywhere so soon, having forced the move to Newcastle in the first place, it would raise eyebrows. And that's why Louis Saha has advised him to stay at St James' Park for the time being.

“I’m not surprised that there’s interest in him because he’s been showing the signs of a player that wants to develop as quickly as possible," he told Betfred .

“I don’t think it's a good time for him to move however, because it’s not a good thing to move around different clubs frequently and he’s only been at St James’ Park for 18 months. I would advise him to remain at Newcastle this summer.”

This is somewhat ironic coming from Saha, who went from Everton to Spurs to Sunderland in the space of a little over six months — although in fairness, he had little choice in that matter, with Tottenham electing not to extend his initial half-year contract following a January move from Goodison Park. And you'd have to say there's probably some merit to his advice.

Liverpool, for its part, may well be happy to bide its time. It has been reported that Gordon's contract only runs to 2026, which would give Newcastle a headache next summer.

When Gordon does move on, Saha would like to see his old side Manchester United in the race. He has made a comparison to Alejandro Garnacho:

“In regards to whether I want Manchester United to join the race to sign him, I think Manchester United will always like those types of players that can be unpredictable, that are hardworking and can impact games," he said. "His work rate is certainly an advantage, but he’s also very solid technically. Similar to Alejandro Garnacho, Anthony brings energy, confidence and drive and that’s so exciting to see.”

Liverpool.com says: The saga has probably been good for Liverpool, because it has made it clear that Gordon would like the move. It can happily come back in a year's time in the knowledge that it would have an advantage over other suitors.

But Saha is right that a move this summer would come with a few question marks. Last season was Gordon's best by far, so it might be best for all parties to see how he gets on over the course of another full campaign with Newcastle.
