Trent Alexander-Arnold shares Jurgen Klopp theory over England job after calls with former boss

Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold would welcome Jurgen Klopp replacing Gareth Southgate as England manager.

But the 25-year-old doesn't think Klopp would be open to taking up the role after leaving Anfield at the end of last season. Southgate stepped down as England boss after losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain.

Klopp is one of several names linked with the post but it was reported this week that he wants to stick to his plan to take at least a year out of football. The German admitted he was 'running out of energy' when he called time on his Liverpool tenure.

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror , Alexander-Arnold revealed he has spoken to Klopp since his departure - and doesn't expect him to become his boss at international level.

He said: "I enjoyed every moment I worked with him, we shared amazing memories, forged an amazing relationship, an amazing bond. So of course if that were to happen, we would pick up where we left off. But I would be surprised if he did take it.

"It was clear when he announced when he was leaving, the conversations I have had with him, everything on social media, he seems to be enjoying his time off, so it would be a huge surprise.”

Alexander-Arnold's role within the England set-up has been a topic of debate for some time. He made his debut back in 2018 but has won just 29 caps in a number of different positions.

He started Euro 2024 in a new midfield role but was dropped for England's third group game and did not start again at the tournament. The Reds icon did however score the winning penalty in the quarter-final shootout victory over Switzerland.

Liverpool's No.66 speaks very highly of Southgate despite that and discussed his relationship with him and Klopp. He added: "I agree 100 percent that when you are working with people you admire, you get to know them as a person, you want to do well for them.

"You saw what an amazing person Gareth is, he is an amazing man. It was the same on a day to day basis with Jurgen, you see how they handle themselves and others.”

“Can you ever be friends with your boss? You respect their expertise and decisions, but in the back of your mind, you always know they are the boss!"

Alexander-Arnold will now enjoy some time off before linking up with his next manager at club level in Arne Slot. He is not expected to travel to the United States for Liverpool's pre-season tour, alongside the likes of Darwin Nunez and Alexis Mac Allister.
