Ex-Buccaneers, Dolphins Star LB Shockingly Announces Retirement Ahead of Season

The Miami Dolphins find themselves in a peculiar situation, as they now have a hole at linebacker that was previously filled this offseason. Reports indicate that star linebacker, Shaquil Barrett, has surprisingly announced his retirement ahead of the 2024 regular season.
Barrett shared an official statement on Instagram announcing his retirement. The veteran linebacker claims he's ready to spend more time with his family. He wants to help his wife and kids achieve their dreams.
"It's time for me to hang it up. It's been a great ride and I appreciate everything that came with it over the years. I'm ready to shift my full focus to my wife and kids and helping them realize their dreams and catch 'em. Anyone who caught their dreams before know the work, time, and consistency required to reach them. I'm ready to start building them skills up in my kids which will take 100 percent commitment. I know to some it'll be a surprise but I've been thinking about this for a while and the decision has never been more clear than it is now."
Shaquil Barrett played nine seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and served as one of their top linebackers during his tenure. He signed a one-year $7 million contract with the Dolphins as a free agent in March. Now, he'll be riding off into the sunset to spend more time with his family.
Miami Dolphins linebacker Shaquil Barrett (58) works out during mandatory minicamp at Baptist Health Training Complex.
Additionally, Barrett made the Pro Bowl twice with the Buccaneers and won a Super Bowl with the franchise in 2021 with Tom Brady at quarterback. During his time in Tampa Bay, Shaquil Barrett recorded an impressive 400 total tackles (73 for a loss), 59 sacks, 22 forced fumbles, and three interceptions.
As for the Dolphins, they'll now have to rely on other players for depth. Shaquil Barrett was in line to rotate in with the EDGE rushers, giving Miami a solid group consisting of Bradly Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, and rookie Chop Robinson.
With Barrett out of the picture, the Dolphins may consider signing another linebacker in free agency. But regardless, we should expect Mohamed Kamara, Cameron Goode, and several others to compete for Shaquil Barrett's vacant role.
Miami is still in a good spot though. This is a franchise that had a potent offense that can score at will thanks to Tyreek Hill and the run game. The Dolphins should remain one of the most competitive teams in the league yet again, with the AFC East an open competition.
