INDIANAPOLIS — A search is now underway for a driver to replace Alexander Rossi at this weekend’s IndyCar race after Rossi broke his right thumb during the opening practice in Toronto on Friday.

Arrow McLaren confirmed in a statement posted on X , formerly known as Twitter, that Rossi sustained the injury while participating in the final stages of Friday afternoon’s practice session and will miss Sunday’s race. Arrow McLaren added that Rossi sustained the injury after his vehicle collided with the Turn 8 wall.

Videos of the incident posted on the NTT Indycar Series X account show the moment Rossi suffered the fracture. The video shows Rossi turning his No. 7 Chevy attempting to complete a 90-degree right turn when he was unable to turn the vehicle wide enough before it struck a tire barrier near the corner exit.

“Following an incident that resulted in contact with the Turn 8 wall during Practice 1 at the Ontario Honda Dealers Grand Prix, Alexander Rossi was seen and released by IndyCar medical,” Arrow McLaren said in a statement. “The incident resulted in a broken right thumb. Alexander will be unable to compete this weekend.”

As of this article’s publication, Arrow McLaren has provided no timeline on when it will announce a substitute driver.
