Atlanta placed Albies on the 10-day injured list Monday with a fractured left wrist. Albies suffered the unfortunate injury during Sunday's game versus the Cardinals while attempting to apply a tag on a stolen-base attempt. The expectation is that he will miss about eight weeks of action, which would put Albies on the shelf until mid-September. Rookie Nacho Alvarez will get a chance to cover second base in Albies' absence, with Whit Merrifield and Zack Short also around to provide depth.

Atlanta signed recently released utilityman Whit Merrifield to a major league contract Monday, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed.

The move came just a day after it was revealed that star second baseman Ozzie Albies broke his wrist against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday and will miss about eight weeks.



Merrifield, 35, played in 53 games with the NL East rival Phillies before the team released him on July 12.

The Phillies had signed the three-time All-Star to a one-year, $8 million contract during the offseason.

The Atlanta Braves already had a lengthy list of injuries that they've had to deal with this season and now it only gets longer with Ozzie Albies headed to the IL with a wrist injury.
