A Minute with Drexel: Remember to Pray

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — I’m sharing a little secret with you today: I’m getting older… and as I get older, I find that sometimes, my memory isn’t as good as it used to be. Wait.. you, too?

One of the things I find myself forgetting is to keep the commitment I’ve made to pray for other people. Awhile back, I started a practice that helps me to remember. I light a candle every day and put it on my desk or somewhere else that I can see it throughout the day. Every time I look at that candle, it reminds me to pray for people who are in need.

In the Bible, in the books of Ephesians, James and 1st Timothy, we are instructed to pray for others. And get this: In the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, we are told that we shouldn’t just pray for the people we care about, but for those who aren’t very nice to us. Ouch! But who knows? Maybe our prayers can help turn those situations around.

Perhaps this week you can set up some type of prayer reminder. It might be lighting a candle or putting up a sticky note where you can see it. It might be setting a mid-day or afternoon alarm on your phone or getting into the habit of praying every time you come to a stop light. Whatever works for you. Just as long as it’s something to guide your thoughts back to that person or need during the day.
