HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — With the Tennessee Valley suffering from moderate to extreme drought, the area could benefit from the rain.

While rain has been isolated to scattered in coverage, leading to heavy rain for some and none for others, that changes as widespread is expected this week.

A strong south-southwest wind will support the continuous flow of warm air and deep tropical moisture into the southeast region. Dew points will remain well into the 70s leading to oppressive humidity and uncomfortable conditions.

A warm front will push north on Monday supporting the scattered rain showers and isolated storms. As a cold front approaches the region, the coverage of rain will increase Tuesday into Wednesday. Pockets of moderate to heavy rain will be possible during this time.

Make sure you have the umbrella and rain gear handy if you have any outdoor plans this week!

The severe weather threat will be on the low this week, but an isolated strong storm can’t be ruled out.

Torrential rain, strong winds over 40 mph, and frequent lightning will be possible with any storms that develop. Be aware of low visibility from the heaviest rain pockets and if you come across a flooded road make sure you turn around and find an alternate route.

The Tennessee Valley is forecast to see one to two and a half inches of rain through Friday but it won’t all fall at once. Training storms or cells moving over the same location multiple times will lead to the threat of excessive rain.

Areas that see the heaviest rain could experience ponding on roads, flooding of low-lying areas, and flooding of small creeks or streams. Localized flash flooding can’t be ruled out.
