    If you don’t want to wait until your property tax bill arrives in the mail mid-August you can check out the county’s online tax calculator and get an idea of what you might owe.

    “This can be used as a tool to help people prepare for their tax bills to set up payment arrangements and property budget,” said Wilson County Tax Administrator Crawford Bolton. “All property tax rates have been set now.”

    The tax calculator is available on the county’s website at wilsoncountync.gov/departments/tax-department/tax-calculator or the shortened link tinyurl.com/5n6dbydv.&nbsp ;

    If you live in a municipal district, select where you live; Bolton said you don’t have to worry about selecting a fire district.

    If you live in the county, but outside a municipal district, you will select “county” in the drop box and then select your fire district. If you’re unsure what fire tax district you live in, you can find it on your property tax record online or contact the tax office, Bolton said.

    To use the calculator, you will also need to know what your new assessed property value. That can also be located online or by calling the office.

    More than 41,000 real properties, including homes, land and buildings, were reappraised during Wilson County’s 2024 revaluation process. Those new revaluations showed about a 56% overall countywide increase from the 2016 revaluation process. Portions of the county had an overall range between 40% to 80%. State law requires counties to conduct a revaluation at least once every eight years.

    “This year everybody’s tax rate has changed due to the increase in valuation from the reappraisal of all real property countywide,” Bolton said.

    Tax bills go out mid-August and are due Sept. 1. The last day to pay those bills without interest is Jan. 6, he said.

    Bolton said many people are unaware the tax office does offer payment plans prior to their tax’s bill due date year. “We want people to know that we do have prepayment installment options available,” he said. “We’re just trying to help people set up a budget without additional fees and interest. We want property owners to work with us ahead of time to help alleviate the tax burden.”

    The tax office also offers property tax relief programs. New applicants can apply for those programs in January with a June 1 deadline. For more information contact the Wilson County Tax Office at 252-399-2900.
