Lukas Nelson is pretty hard to dislike. He’s the son of legendary country artist Willie Nelson, but he’s built quite a name for himself on his own. His work under Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real has been quite successful and notably different from his father’s work. He’s also got a killer voice that can tackle any Willie Nelson classic, easily. And if you don’t particularly like Lukas Nelson’s music, you may just be missing out on some notable hits. Let’s take a look at four examples!

    1. “A Rock Star Buys A Coffee Shop” by Neil Young feat. Promise Of The Real

This collaboration with Neil Young is an excellent example of how well Lukas Nelson works with other legendary artists. Though, we can’t imagine he was too intimidated by the prospect, considering his father is one of the most well-known country artists of all time. “A Rock Star Buys A Coffee Shop” is a protest song about Starbucks that was one of the lead singles from Young’s environmentalist concept album, The Monsanto Years.

    2. “Find Yourself” by Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real feat. Lady Gaga

This excellent single from Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real’s self-titled 2015 album is a delight. Surprisingly, Lady Gaga performs the background vocals on the track, as well as the backing vocals for the band’s song “Set Me Down On A Cloud”.

“Find Yourself”, though, is a noteworthy accomplishment. The song is about taking back your power, and it’s written in a soothing sort of way that you’d expect from Lukas Nelson. If you don’t particularly like Lukas Nelson, this is the song to listen to.

    3. “Perennial Bloom (Back To You)” by Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real

This track from the 2021 album A Few Stars Apart is one of the record’s very best tracks. The whole of the album was recorded during the height of the pandemic, and there’s a sort of desperation and sense of being lost to it. “Perennial Bloom (Back To You)” is a simple, inspiring sort of song that crescendos into something akin to a hopeful anthem.

    4. “Turn Off The News (Build A Garden)” by Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real

Nowadays, this song’s title is pretty good advice. It’s also a very tender, beautiful song. Nelson’s voice sounds similar to his father’s on this track, and it’s quite heartwarming to hear. “Turn Off The News (Build A Garden)” could be seen as a protest song of sorts, but it’s mainly an encouraging, gentle track about focusing on your family and community in times of crisis.
