Erik ten Hag sends 'obvious' transfer demand to Man Utd chiefs after $95m deals

Erik ten Hag has lauded the proactive approach to transfers at Old Trafford, stating that it's 'what clubs like Manchester United should do'.

The Red Devils have already secured deals for Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro in the transfer window for a total of $95m (74m) and Ten Hag is pleased with the forward-thinking structure implemented by Ineos.

Zirkzee and Yoro's signings have addressed two key positions for the summer, with Yoro making his debut in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Rangers at Murrayfield. These acquisitions were made under the guidance of Ineos, featuring Dan Ashworth as sporting director, Jason Wilcox as technical director, and Christopher Vivell as interim head of recruitment.

United now need to offload players to generate funds, a task Ten Hag acknowledges as a balancing act. He aims for a larger squad this season to cope with an increased number of games, given the Europa League group stage now includes two additional matches.

He also seeks more quality within the squad, and United are still pursuing Matthijs de Ligt, while Manuel Ugarte and Martin Zubimendi are considered for a central midfield role.

United are set to bolster their squad with a new centre-back and midfielder this summer, while also considering a full-back if Aaron Wan-Bissaka departs, amid Premier League interest in the ex-Crystal Palace defender.

Erik ten Hag emphasized the need for both quality and depth, saying: "Competition, yes, we need quality players. But you also need quantity because the season is even tougher than last season so we have to be ready for that.

"That [we need to sell] is also obvious but we want to have a strong squad, as strong as possible. I think at the moment the football leadership is very on the front foot. I think that's what clubs like Manchester United should do."

United's transfer strategy has shown a clear focus on youth, with the signings of Zirkzee and Yoro, who impressed during his 45-minute stint at Murrayfield. Ten Hag praised Yoro's debut performance after just one training session, signaling to the senior defenders that the young talent is poised to play a significant role in United's defense this season.

He added: "We're very pleased we've done business - we have Yoro in, we have Zirkzee in - two high potential assets for the future. But when I say future, the future also starts today. The next game is always the most important, next season is always the most important.

"He's here, we think he can play but there's so many games to come that he'll be in a group of four or five. I think for the first time, after just one training [session], it's a very mature performance. That's what we saw when we scouted him. It's great to have him. He's a very young, talented centre-back and there's a lot to come."

Liverpool.com says: United has made some impressive moves early in the transfer window but there is still clearly work to do with the squad. Ten Hag will know other arrivals will probably only happen once some players are shown the exit door.
