CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. (KOAM) — Just before 1:45 p.m. Sunday reports of a structure fire on NW 10th St, 1/2 mile south of US-400 alerted Cherokee County E-911.
Responding units and firefighters included, Scammon Fire, Weir Fire, West Mineral Fire, Lola Fire, and Columbus Fire. Crawford County Fire District 3 , Sheridan Township Fire, Cherokee Township Fire, Cherokee County Ambulance and Cherokee County Deputies responded.
On arrival firefighters were faced with a 2-story wood-framed structure where flames were already through the roof.
It was immediately a defensive fire, ‘ thank God no one was home at the time of the fire ’ one firefighter mentioned to us on the scene.
We are told shortly after firefighters arrival the 1st floor was showing signs of collapse. When that happened the roof came down and fueled the fire even more because under the tin roof were wood shake shingles.
As the front 3/4 of the home was on the ground firefighters then could advance, standing even on the roof getting water down into the pile.
