5 roster battles to watch at Miami Dolphins training camp

The Miami Dolphins have a large number of positions already set in stone heading into the start of 2024 training camp.

However, there are still a number of new faces on the roster and a number of positional battles set to unfold at the Baptist Health Complex over the next six weeks.

Here are five noteworthy battles on the Dolphins' roster to keep an eye on during camp and the preseason.

    5) The running back rotation

A great duo from 2023 turned into an absolute embarrassment of riches after the Dolphins traded into the fourth round back in April and drafted Tennessee RB Jaylen Wright with the 120th overall pick.  Now, Miami has three players who can fly with the ball in their hands, and three players who can catch the ball very well out of the backfield, a key in Mike McDaniel's offense.

It might take some time, but Wright could end up forcing his way into the top two of Miami's rotation.  Whether than happens sooner than later depends on how he looks during his opportunities in the preseason.

    4) Kickoff returner

With the rule changes, this becomes a position of exponentially increased importance.  Fortunately, Miami has a list of candidates longer than a CVS receipt to fill the role.

Does Miami expose one of its offensive stars/speedsters like Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Raheem Mostert, or De'Von Achane?  Do they go with one of the Washington draftees (Malik or Tahj) or give Wright a look?

McDaniel has plenty of options at his disposal.

    3) Right guard

Robert Hunt is off to Carolina, and Miami will have a tough time matching that production in 2024.  They re-signed Robert Jones and added Jack Driscoll in free agency.  With the returning Lester Cotton and Liam Eichenberg, there are four potential candidates to take the job.  Jones and Cotton could have an edge having started in McDaniel's offense.

    2) Defensive tackle

This is, to clarify, for the spot alongside Zach Sieler, who's as much of a lead-pipe lock for his roster spot as anyone on the team not named Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, Jalen Ramsey, Jevon Holland, and Jaylen Waddle.  Calais Campbell should also be locked in for one of three defensive line spots.

Miami signed a whole lot of "eh" this offseason, or so it appears on paper.  Teair Tart might have a slight edge for the starting job, but its razor thin.  We'll see if someone like Neville Gallimore, Benito Jones, or Jonathan Harris can have a strong camp and lay claim to a starting spot.

    1) Edge

This is the big question mark on the roster by a country mile.  With Shaq Barrett's retirement and Miami's starting duo appearing unlikely to be ready for the start of the season, it's anyone's guess right now who will start off the edge.

At least for one of the spots.  Rookie Chop Robinson should earn one of the spots, but the other is a complete mystery right now.  Rookie Mohamed Kamara could use a breakout camp/preseason here, but more likely Miami's starter isn't on the roster right now.  The team is reportedly working out Emmanuel Ogbah, who they released back in February, on Monday.
