A man has been charged with attempted murder after a passenger on a Croydon tram was hospitalised with multiple stab wounds.

Andrew Mullings, 40, is accused of trying to kill Bright Chukwu on a tram on July 18 as it travelled between Sandilands and Lloyd Park.

Mullings, whose address is given as a YMCA in Croydon, is charged with attempted murder as well as possession of two knives and a meat cleaver.

He appeared on Saturday at Highbury Corner magistrates court to face the charges for the first time.

Mullings did not enter any pleas as the case was sent to the Old Bailey, with a next hearing set for August 16.

After the incident, which happened at around 6.45pm, police in Croydon said the victim had suffered stab wounds to his face, stomach, arm and leg.

The investigation was handed over from Met officers who were first on the scene to the British Transport Police.

Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, who is in charge of policing in South London for the Met, posted on social media that officers had “gripped a chaotic scene, providing first aid to the victim and fast time investigative enquiries leading to the arrest of the suspect.

“An example of the great work our officers undertake on a daily basis.

“Our thoughts are obviously with the victim who is recovering in hospital at this time.

“We also shouldn’t lose sight of the impact of these incidents on the officers and other emergency services.

“My heartfelt thanks to these amazing emergency responders.”

Mullings has been remanded in custody until the next court hearing.
