We’ve got some tough news coming out of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Mercury Marine, a well-known company in the area, is laying off around 1,700 workers 1,700 workers in what they’re calling “short-term layoffs.” This news has hit hard, with employees expressing shock and anxiety about their future.

The layoffs will see workers losing eight weeks of work, spread out over two-week intervals from early July through November. Unfortunately, those affected won’t be receiving pay during these periods but can apply for unemployment benefits.

The company had already cut more than 400 jobs earlier this year, so this new wave of layoffs is adding to the strain. Mercury Marine’s spokesperson, Lee Gordon, said the company is still growing its market share globally and will continue to employ many in Wisconsin. However, they’re currently facing challenges that make it hard to keep up with market demands.

One employee, who wished to remain anonymous, shared the impact this is having on their life. They’re worried about falling behind on child support and struggling to find another job that pays as well as Mercury Marine. “It’s really going to cut into a lot of people’s budgets,” they said. Even with unemployment benefits, they’ll only be getting about half of their usual paycheck, and finding a new job locally is proving difficult.

It’s a tough situation for many, and the uncertainty is taking a toll on both financial and emotional well-being. As Mercury Marine navigates these market challenges, let’s hope for a quick recovery and better days ahead for all those affected.
