Do you smell it? Do you hear it? Can you feel it? Winter. Is. Coming.
While your friends are focused on unimportant summer activities, the POWDER News team is staying locked in so you don't miss a beat on the offseason news and entertainment you rely on to keep you sane.
Without further ado, let's take a look at POWDER's top stories from last week, July 15-July 21, 2024.
Synopsis: POWDER Gear Editor Max Ritter checks in from Whistler, the world's best bike park. Max dives into the game-changing Fitzsimmons 8, new trails, and more.

Editor's Thoughts: It only makes sense that Max would turn his vacation into a cameo post for us on the News team. I mean, what was he supposed to do, ride Whistler's sick new lift and trails and not write about it? Come on now.
4. Mt. Baldy, California to Reopen After Dodging Wildfire
Synopsis: Mt. Baldy, a popular ski resort in Southern California, is counting their blessings as the 2,900+ acre Vista Fire failed to reach their boundaries. The resort has reopened for summer sightseeing and hiking.

Editor's Thoughts: The last two weeks were tense for our friends at Baldy. The resort's snowmaking reservoir was used by firefighting crews, flames reached the edge of the ski area boundary, and the future seemed uncertain. We're thrilled that the hard work of fire crews saved this beloved ski area.
3. Freeride World Tour Skier Lily Bradley Trains by Going to Punk Shows
Synopsis: Lily Bradley (they/them) is one of the world's best skiers, but how do they stay fit during the offseason? POWDER writer Ella Boyd explores how biking, friends, and punk rock shows play into Bradley's summer.

Editor's Thoughts: Unlike mainstream sports, there's so little we know about the world's best skiers. One of our focuses on the News team is to conduct interviews like Ella has done with Lily Bradley to expose the details, inter-workings, and secrets to their success.
Synopsis: It's way too early to make predictions about Winter '24/'25, but that's not stopping weather experts and meteorologists from trying. Take a look at Direct Weather's winter outlook and how La Niña could dominate the season.
Editor's Thoughts: The hype around El Niño/La Niña can be exhausting, but we're here to help you make sense of it heading into next season. Remember that any long-range predictions about winter are subject to change.
Synopsis: POWDER writer Ian Greenwood , perturbed by his friend's luxurious stories of rail travel in Switzerland, explores why America is decidedly lacking in this mode of transportation. Will we have ski trains in the future?

Editor's Thoughts: Ian does a fantastic job at asking questions on the minds of thousands of skiers and turning the answers into a story. In this case, he explains why Americans shouldn't get their hopes up for taking a train to their favorite ski resort anytime soon.
