NITRO, WV (WOWK) – One of West Virginia’s most eagerly anticipated construction projects is closer than ever to completion.

The West Virginia Department of Highways tells 13 News that the I-64 Widening Project is expected to be done in late fall. The project will cost about $225 million in total.

Drivers like Bruce Johnston say they’re just waiting to see the end results

“I’m very excited about it. When the South Charleston-Dunbar bridge was built, I was excited about that. It got bottlenecked, too. When it gets done, it’ll be nice,” Johnston said.

A spokesperson with the DOH says the project remains on schedule. They sent a statement to 13 News saying in part:

“Over this past weekend, the contractor worked to make needed modifications to the Nitro EB Ramps (Exit 45). Mainline Interstate-64 EB was also realigned to cross the newly completed portion of the WV 25 Overpass bridge. The traffic for this project is not in its final configuration. The concrete median wall needs to be fully installed to separate EB and WB traffic on I-64. Portions of mainline I-64 will be getting final pavement placed in the next few weeks. Roadway lighting and signage is currently in progress or soon to be in progress.”

The project also includes the replacement of I-64 bridges that cross railroad tracks, plus revamping the St. Albans interchange and ramps connecting to 817.
