BENTON COUNTY, Ind. — An investigation is underway after one person was killed in a plane crash in Benton County Monday night.

According to a press release from the Benton County Sheriff’s Department, dispatchers received a report of a plane crash in the area of County Road 200 East between CR 700 South and CR 800 South.

Multiple agencies responded to the area and determined the scene was a bean field located on the west side of CR 200 East near Oxford. A yellow fixed-wing crop duster was lying upside down in the field.

BCSD reported that the craft was on fire when emergency personnel arrived at the scene. The blaze was quickly extinguished and the plane’s male pilot was subsequently pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s department indicated the plane was owned and operated by Bi-State Air. The deceased pilot will be identified by the Benton County Coroner’s Office after an autopsy is completed.

Federal officials with the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration will also be assisting with the investigation. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) will also be conducting an investigation at the scene.

A “no fly” order has been put in place over the crash site via the Purdue University Airport. CR 200 East will remain closed between CR 700 South and CR 800 South until the crashed plane has been removed.
