HAWAII NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii (KHON2) — Increased seismic activity and ground deformation in the volcano’s upper East Rift Zone prompted closures around Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on Monday morning.

The following areas are subject to temporary closures, according to NPS:

    • Chain of Craters Road is closed at the Devastation intersection to the coast
    • Kulanaokuaiki Campground
    • Escape Road trail
    • Crater Rim Trail (south of Nahuku)
    • Coastal backcountry areas and Napau sites

Park Superintendent Rhonda Loh emphasized that while closing these areas is challenging, ensuring visitor safety is their primary concern.

“It is never an easy decision to close areas, but it is the right thing to do. Safety is always our top priority,” Loh said. “We remain in constant communication with scientists at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and will continue to notify the public of any changes.”

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory indicated uncertainty regarding whether current conditions might lead to an impending eruption. However, an eruption in Kilauea’s East Rift Zone remains a possibility.

Despite the closures, popular spots like Volcano House, Nahuku, and the Kilauea Visitor Center remain open.
