American Monster on ID: What Happened to Ann Metz?

American Monster on ID recently reexamined the murder case of Ann Metz at the hands of her estranged husband, Marshall Metz. The episode titled “I Love My Wife” aired on the network on June 30, 2024.

The official synopsis of the episode reads, “Ann Metz lives for her family, particularly her two beautiful granddaughters; her husband Marshall despises Ann’s giving her time to anyone but him, and he will go to desperate measures to keep hold of her.”

What happened to Ann Metz?

The Frederick News-Post reported that on September 29, 2009, Ann Metz died after her husband, Marshall Metz, shot her. The incident occurred at the couple’s home in Dogwood Court, after which Marshall left Ann to die at the scene. The duo had been married for almost 40 years but were estranged for about a month during the time of the crime.

Ann Metz reportedly went to the house to feed their turtles and use the computer. She then began arguing with Marshall over issues concerning their family and finances. Marshall claimed the 60-year-old took one of his handguns, which accidentally went off when they got into a struggle over the weapon. According to his narrative, despite getting shot, Ann took another rifle, which he claimed also went off.

Following this, Marshall covered Ann with a blanket and waited for nearly an hour before calling for help. Another The Frederick News-Post report stated that the victim was still alive on the kitchen floor when first responders arrived at the scene and died at Frederick Memorial Hospital later.

Authorities arrested Ann Metz’s husband, Marshall Metz, in connection with her murder. They identified the murder weapons as two .22-caliber firearms, one a pistol and the other a rifle. The case resulted in Marshall’s conviction in 2010. Following the guilty verdict, he received a life sentence without the possibility of parole with an additional 20-year term for using a handgun in a crime of violence.
