Wildfire smoke returns to West Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Wildfire smoke will be visible in West Michigan skies through at least Wednesday. The source of the smoke is wildfires blazing in Canada. Upper-level winds will push Canadian smoke south, staining skies gray during the day.

Most of the smoke is expected to stay elevated through Wednesday. A cold front moving into Michigan Tuesday night will push some smoke closer to the surface in spots, occasionally increasing haze or producing a faint bonfire smell at ground level.

Showers and storms will accompany the cold front, which will also help to drag smoke particulates from the air and pull them to the ground.

Sunshine and blue skies will return by Thursday, but a return of wildfire smoke is possible for the remainder of summer and fall.
