The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association has held a state volleyball tournament every year since 1975 (with the exception of 2020 due to COVID-19). State champions have been crowned in four classifications each year since 1977.
The 2023 state championship matches were held Nov. 17 at Harford Community College. Richard Montgomery (4A), North Hagerstown (3A), Centennial (2A) and Clear Spring (1A) emerged as state champions.
Williamsport holds the record for most volleyball state titles with 16, followed by Centennial (15) and Smithsburg (14). Smithsburg played in the 1A state final last year, and Williamsport reached the 2A state semifinals.

When do the Maryland public high school volleyball playoffs begin?
The playoffs open with region quarterfinals on Oct. 31 or Nov. 1, followed by region semifinals on Nov. 4 and region finals on Nov. 6, with all region games held at the higher seed.
