Wisconsin's school system ranks as fifth-best in the country, according to a new study by WalletHub , a personal finance company.

The company analyzed quality and safety metrics to rank the public school systems in all 50 U.S. states and D.C. The study used 32 metrics to pinpoint quality and safety, including student-teacher ratios, graduation rates among low-income students, standardized test scores, school safety plans and bullying rates.

Wisconsin public schools have generally placed among the best in the country: in January, the state ranked as having the 10th best school system nationwide, according to Teach Simple , a company that sells access to teaching materials.

Here's what landed Wisconsin in the top five and how the state's public schools compare to the rest of the country.

Wisconsin scored 60.62 out of 100 in WalletHub's ranking system, which allotted 80 points to quality metrics and 20 points to safety.

Massachusetts, the top-ranked school system, scored 74.36 out of 100, while New Mexico ranked last with a score of 27.92. Wisconsin also did notably better than its neighboring Midwestern states, with Minnesota and Michigan ranking 24th and 36th, respectively. Iowa, Illinois and Indiana managed to crack the top 20, coming in at 20th, 12th and 13th, respectively.

In terms of individual metrics, Wisconsin ranked fourth for quality and 18th for safety nationwide. The state's math test scores and median SAT scores both ranked as fifth-best in the country, and its drop-out rate was the third lowest in the country.

Wisconsin was also deemed a "low spending and strong" school system by WalletHub.

Almost all the schools in the top 10 were also among the top 10 highest spending school systems in the U.S. Wisconsin and Nebraska, however, cracked the top 10 while respectively ranking as 25th and 27th in spending.

As of 2020 Wisconsin spent $12,740 per pupil on elementary and secondary education, which is 5.6% below the national average, according to the U.S. Census Bureau . Last year, Wisconsin lawmakers passed a bill boosting the minimum spending per student from $10,000 to $11,000 statewide — helping out the lowest-spending public school districts in the state.
