Jets' offseason drama with Haason Reddick takes a turn that everyone saw coming

The New York Jets traded for Haason Reddick back in April, and so far, things have not worked out as planned. At all.

Reddick held out during mandatory minicamp, which is typically not a good sign when it comes to a player's plans for the rest of the offseason. Sure enough, Reddick's holdout has officially lasted into training camp, as he didn't show up for work when veterans reported on Tuesday, July 23.

It's an interesting development, as Reddick will face fines for missing camp, and, the Jets won't be able to waive the fines, per the NFL's rules. Reddick will face a $50k fine for each day he misses camp. He could simply "hold-in", which means he'd show up to practice and avoid the fines, but he's obviously not doing that. That only adds another layer to the whole situation.

The Jets lost Bryce Huff, to the Eagles of all teams, during free agency and Reddick is supposed to help offset the 10.0 sacks Huff logged in 2023. Reddick is one of the better pass rushers in the league and his presence would certainly help a Jets defense that needs to generate consistent, effective pressure with its front four.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports an adjustment, and not a full-blown extension, to Reddick's deal should be enough to get the two-time Pro Bowler to report to team activities. The Jets currently have a little more than $5.7 million in cap space, so they could certainly make an adjustment, depending on how general manager Joe Douglas can finagle the numbers.

Either way, Reddick is certainly sending a message to the Jets, and he's made his point. We'll see how New York responds and how it plays out.
