Editors note: The following story has been updated for clarity.

As summer draws to a close, students and parents across Lafayette are gearing up for the new school year. With the first day of school fast approaching, here’s everything you need to know to ensure a smooth transition back to the classroom.

    Start dates

The Lafayette Parish School System has announced that the first day of school for students will be the week of Aug. 5 . This applies to all public elementary, middle and high schools in the district. Parents are encouraged to check with individual schools for specific start times and any additional orientation sessions that may be scheduled.

    School supplies

Schools have provided lists of required supplies for each grade level. These lists are available on the LPSS website and at local retailers. Early shopping is recommended to avoid last-minute rushes and to ensure you get all necessary items.

    Transportation

Bus routes and schedules are available on the LPSS website. Parents are advised to review these in advance and ensure that their children know their bus numbers and pick-up/drop-off locations. For those who drive their children to school, be aware of drop-off and pick-up procedures to maintain safety and efficiency.

    Health and safety

With health and safety still a top priority, LPSS has updated its guidelines to include enhanced cleaning protocols, hand sanitizing stations, and optional mask-wearing policies. Parents are asked to monitor their children for any signs of illness and keep them home if they are unwell.

    Meal programs

The district offers breakfast and lunch programs at all schools. Menus and pricing can be found on the LPSS website. For families in need, applications for free or reduced-price meals are available and should be submitted as soon as possible.

    School calendar

The 2024-2025 school calendar includes important dates such as holidays, parent-teacher conferences, and early dismissal days. Parents should familiarize themselves with these dates to plan accordingly. The full calendar is accessible on the LPSS website.

    Communication

Staying informed is crucial. Parents are encouraged to regularly check the LPSS website , follow the district’s social media accounts, and sign up for school newsletters and alerts. Open communication with teachers and school administrators is also key to addressing any concerns or questions that may arise throughout the year.

To help ease the transition back to school, parents can start establishing routines a week or two before school starts. This includes setting regular bedtimes, organizing study spaces, and discussing the upcoming school year with their children to address any anxieties or excitement they may have.

As the first day of school approaches, make sure all necessary forms and documents, such as immunization records and emergency contact information, are up to date and submitted to your child’s school. Additionally, it’s a good idea to label all personal items, including school supplies and clothing, to prevent loss.

For more information, parents can visit the Lafayette Parish School System’s website or contact their child’s school directly.
