TEXAS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Thousands of Texans were left with an uneasy feeling late Monday night after feeling their houses shake, leaving many to wonder what exactly they had just experienced.

At around 10:40 p.m. on Monday, July 22, 2024, several members of communities across the Lone Star State took to social media, posting statuses in several local groups asking if anyone else felt their homes shaking.

The posts all had hundreds of responses within minutes, leading many to believe they may have felt the tremors of an earthquake.

As it turns out, those beliefs were not unfounded.

According to the United States Geological Survey , an earthquake occurred near Snyder, Texas , at around 10:38 p.m. on Monday, July 22, 2024, with a magnitude measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale .

The USGS reported the epicenter of the earthquake was 17 kilometers (about 10.5 miles) northeast of Hermleigh.

While a majority of the reports came from North Texas, West Texas, and the Texas Panhandle, several reports were also made in Oklahoma, along with a few from southeastern New Mexico.

Tremors were reportedly felt in Lubbock, Abilene, Amarillo, San Angelo, Midland, Odessa, Wichita Falls, and the Dallas/Fort Worth area, according to data from the USGS.

While it is unclear at this time if any injuries or property damage occurred as a result of the earthquake, the most recent estimates from the USGS website suggest a low likelihood of fatalities and damage.
