New York Giants Urged To Sign This Versatile Playmaker

As the New York Giants get set for the 2024 season, they have a lot of question marks going into training camp. T

This offseason, the Giants made the tough decision to let running back Saquon Barkley walk in free agency. While that might be the best move for the franchise long-term, it will certainly be felt in 2024.

In the NFL Draft, New York did add a talented young weapon in wide receiver Malik Nabers, but it didn’t add an impact player to replace Barkley at running back in the draft or in free agency (they signed Devin Singletary, but he isn’t exactly Barkley).

Since being drafted, Barkley was a major part of the offense in both the running game and the passing game. Now, the Giants will be a much different looking team on offense, as their star running back will now be facing off against them with the Philadelphia Eagles twice a year.

Recently, Dallas Robinson of Pro Football Network spoke about one signing the Giants should make before the season, noting that the Giants should sign running back Jerick McKinnon.

Here’s what he had to say .

Jerick McKinnon played 535 offensive snaps and hauled in 51 receptions for the Chiefs in 2022, but his role dwindled in 2023. His snap rate was nearly sliced in half, while the 31-year-old spent time on injured reserve late in the season before being activated for Kansas City’s eventual Super Bowl victory.

Despite his age, McKinnon doesn’t have much wear and tear. He’s only carried the ball 660 times in his NFL career, instead doing most of his damage as a pass catcher. That’s a role he could play for the Giants with Daniel Jones and Co. next season.

Jerick McKinnon may be aging, but he can still contribute

While McKinnon might be over 30 years old, he has never been used as an every-down back in the NFL. Without the normal wear of a 30+ year old running back, McKinnon can still contribute on offense.

For the last three seasons, McKinnon has played on the Kansas City Chiefs. The 2022 campaign was certainly his best season with the Chiefs, as he totaled 56 receptions, 512 receiving yards, and nine receiving touchdowns.

The Chiefs used McKinnon primarily as a receiver out of the backfield, and he had a lot of success in that role. As of now, the Giants have Singletary, Eric Gray, and Tyrone Tracy Jr. on the depth chart at the halfback position.

Adding McKinnon would give Daniel Jones and the offense a solid receiver out of the backfield and a nice weapon to use on passing downs.
