MERCER COUNTY, NJ - Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler has announced a short-term partnership with Hyundai USA to offer free steering wheel locks for area Hyundai owners.

According to a statement by Kemler these particular vehicles have become common targets for thieves after nationwide social media videos incited a rise in vehicle thefts.

"Steering wheel locks, if used consistently and properly, will provide another layer of security to prevent a car from being stolen," Kemler said. "While nothing is 100% when it comes to outsmarting car thieves, we know that the more difficult you make it, the less likely you are to be a victim of automobile theft."

In order to obtain a wheel lock residents should make an appointment with the Sheriff's Programs Unit at 640 South Broad Street in Trenton by calling 609-209-2880 or sending an email by clicking here. Residents will then be required to present a valid New Jersey driver's license, and provide proof of owning a certain Hyundai model on their vehicle registration.
