Drake Maye's Odds Of Winning Patriots Starting Job Revealed

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye remains a long shot to start in Week 1. However, head coach Jerod Mayo isn't ruling out the possibility completely.

When the Patriots drafted Maye in April, the 21-year-old joined a QB room that already included veteran signal-caller Jacoby Brissett.

With the Patriots set to begin training camp on Wednesday, new Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was, unsurprisingly, asked about the QB1 situation.

Mayo stated that it was "clear" that Brissett was the frontrunner for the role given his experience.

“Coming out of spring, I think it’s clear Jacoby [Brissett] is the most pro-ready guy we have,” Mayo told reporters on Tuesday.

But Mayo also didn't shut the door completely on Maye potentially overtaking Brissett before Week 1.

"If he comes out here and he takes full advantage and lights it up, he could be the Day 1 quarterback," clarified Mayo. "But like I said, coming out of the spring, I think it's Jacoby."

Even the most ardent Maye supporter probably didn't expect Mayo to immediately crown the rookie as the team's QB1.

Over Brissett's eight years of NFL experience, the veteran has started in 48 of his 79 games played.

With the Patriots unlikely to contend just yet, perhaps easing Maye into the starting role works out for all parties involved.
