    From historic eateries to modern establishments, it's easy to find a scoop, sundae, or soft-serve ice cream unique to Ames and the surrounding areas in both Story and Boone County.

    Bricktown Bakery, Nevada

    Bricktown Bakery offers 15 ice cream flavors each day in a variety of scoops—little bitty, single, double, triple, and a flight of six scoops. The ice cream is always changing thanks to seasonal and traditional flavors.

    True to its name, Bricktown Bakery offers an assortment of baked treats as well. Anyone looking to satisfy their sweet tooth may consider combining a fresh pastry or cookie with their ice cream.

    Double-Dipped Ice Cream and Coffee Shop, Huxley

    This Huxley eatery offers hand-dipped ice cream in classic flavors and seasonal specials, like this summer's Cotten Candy or Pirate's Treasure.

    Those looking for something a little more bitter than sweet can check out the coffee menu. Double Dipped Ice Cream and Coffee Shoppe also offers a handful of bakery items to choose from.

    Hickory Park, Ames

    It's not often you find a beloved restaurant that has a separate menu just for ice cream, let alone almost 50 types of sundaes.

    Since it opened in 1970, Hickory Park has been a popular place for locals and visitors. Its large menu includes a multitude of sundaes, shakes and malts, sodas, floats, parfaits and splits.

    The roughly 50 specialty sundaes mean there's something on the menu for everyone. Customers can also make their own concoctions from 17 different flavors and 13 toppings.

    Iowa State University Creamery, Ames

    Not just for students, the Iowa State University Creamery is available to anyone hungry for a sweet scoop. Ice cream flavors rotate weekly and can be purchased in a scoop, cup, or carton.

    The long history of the ISU Creamery started in 1880 with Iowa State University's first Dairy Lab. The creamery was active from 1927 to 1969, before being re-established in 2020.

    Marmalade Moon, Ames

    Marmalade Moon offers 12 flavors of homemade ice cream, available by the scoop or by the pint. The local shop develops its own flavors, like Marmalade Moon and Lemon Butter Biscuit, and rotates its menu seasonally .

    Not your typical ice cream shop, Marmalade Moon also offers snacks, sandwiches, a full coffee bar, a retail shop, and a creative corner.

    Starbucks Drive-In, Nevada

    No, not the Starbucks with the green lady on the logo. Nevada’s historic Starbuck's Drive-In is one of the town's oldest establishments and is known for its soft-serve ice cream. Flavors rotate daily and can be mixed to create fun swirl combinations.

    Starbucks' menu includes several items besides ice cream , including jumbo beefburgers, homemade tenderloins, foot-long coneys, and pie.

    Honorable mention: The Filling Station, Madrid

    The Filling Station at 129 S Water Street in Madrid offers a bevy of ice cream options, from sundaes and soft serve to shakes and flurries.

    The special for the week of July 22 was Addison’s Oreo Fluff Specialty Sundae, which included vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, marshmallow fluff, Oreo and optional nuts, cherry, and whipped cream.

    The Filling Station is open from 1 to 9 p.m., so feel free to stop by when visiting the High Trestle Trail.
