3 Smash-Hit Songs for People Who Say They Don’t Like Lizzo

Has any artist this century experienced the type of rise and fall Lizzo has? Around 2020 she seemed to be the most popular artist. People were discovering her pop hits, appreciating what she had to say about body positivity and self-love. Her songs were earning billions of streams and her story of starting out sleeping in her car before rising to stardom was told far and wide.

But a few years later, Lizzo has seemed to earn a great deal of backlash. From people rebelling against her social stances to those telling behind-the-scenes stories that do not paint the pop star in a very good light, Lizzo seems to have fallen just as fast as she rose in the zeitgeist. But no matter the social media squall around the artist at any given time, she boasts some terrific tunes.

“Truth Hurts” from Cuz I Love You (Deluxe, 2019)

This hit was everywhere at the beginning of the new decade. The track, which begins with a fat piano line and then opens with perhaps Lizzo’s most famous and biting lyric: Why men great ’til they gotta be great. It was a line women everywhere who’ve been let down by the opposite sex could relate to and it was a bit of the language that more than any other made Lizzo a star. Originally released as a standalone track in 2017, the song was later included on the deluxe edition of the artist’s 2019 LP Cuz I Love You. When it was rereleased as a single in 2019, the tune hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Lizzo the only female rapper besides Cardi B and Lauryn Hill to achieve that status as a solo artist. On it, she offers,

“Good as Hell” from Coconut Oil (2016)

During the Lizzo renaissance, this was another track that was rediscovered by audiences even though it was by then almost five years old. Nevertheless, the effervescent song is a bona fide hit. It too was later included as a bonus track on the 2019 deluxe version of Cuz I Love You. The song, which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, was originally recorded in 2016 for the soundtrack of the movie Barbershop: The Next Cut. But after Lizzo performed it at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, it began to take a life on of its own. On the song, she sings,

“Juice” from Cuz I Love You (2019)

The lead single from Lizzo’s breakout LP, this song has perhaps the catchiest chorus. It’s a relentless, funky track that became one of the earworms of the past handful of years.
