HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — It has been one year since a Maryland airman was killed in a hit-and-run while changing a tire in Hanover County, and the case remains unsolved.

On Monday, May 8 of last year, 20-year-old Makai Cummings — Airman 1st Class — was killed while changing a tire on Interstate 295 near the Meadowbridge Road exit in Hanover. The Office of Special Investigations (OSI) and Virginia State Police (VSP) are still investigating the case, and continue to ask for information from the public.

Cummings was returning to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina after visiting family in Baltimore, Maryland, when he had to change a tire on his blue 2011 Infiniti sedan. He was then hit and killed on the southbound lanes of I-295 near mile marker 37.80.

According to a release from OSI, phone records indicate that Cummings called two family members at around 1:56 a.m. VSP arrived on scene at 2:11 a.m. after receiving a call about the incident. Few answers have emerged, despite the established timeline.

OSI Special Agents are asking the public to come forward with any knowledge they have regarding the incident by contacting the OSI Det. 216 at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina with any information at 919-722-1218.

This remains an active criminal investigation for VSP as well, and people can send information to the department at questions@vsp.virginia.gov .
