Matthew Stafford won't holdout or hold in after all. On Tuesday, head coach Sean McVay revealed that the Los Angeles Rams and the quarterback have reached an agreement to a revised version of Stafford's deal, and he will report to training camp.
"Being able to sit down, look each other in the eye," McVay said, was the driving point to reach a new deal.
The details of the new version of the contract haven't come up yet.
Previously, Matthew Stafford was slated to make $31 million in 2024, with a $49.5 million cap hit. This year's salary was guaranteed for Stafford since March 2023 (before that, it was only guaranteed for injuries). However, the lack of future guarantees was a big issue for Stafford. He had only $15 million in guarantees beyond 2024, according to ESPN's NFL insider Adam Schefter .
The quarterback, who's been with the Rams since 2021, is under contract through 2026. He was slated to make $32 million in 2025 and $31 million in 2026. It's unclear at this point if those numbers will change.
It's possible for the Rams to adjust Stafford's contract adding money and/or guarantees, and still reduce his cap hit — for that to happen, the Rams would most likely add two void years to the deal.
Matthew Stafford is coming off what might be considered a career year in 2023. Last season, he had his highest PFF grade ever (85.9).
The Rams acquired Stafford from the Detroit Lions in 2021 in exchange for Jared Goff , two first-round picks, and a third-rounder. Los Angeles won the Super Bowl in Stafford's first season with the team, and they reached a four-year extension right thereafter.
