ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown announced Tuesday that a Correctional Dietary Officer (COD) entered a guilty plea after having a romantic relationship with an inmate in Anne Arundel County.

According to the Attorney’s Office, Ajee Xavier Myers, a three-year veteran Correctional Dietary Officer (CDO), pled guilty to misconduct in court on July 16.

This decision comes after the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) was notified in September of 2023 of an inappropriate relationship between Myers and an inmate at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women (MCIW).

The Attorney’s Office said the investigation discovered that between September and January 2024, Myers took advantage of her position and gave the victim unauthorized privileges.

It was also revealed that Myers did not report violations, added money to the victim’s commissary and spoke to them over the phone on a recorded facility phone over 800 times in three months, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

Officials said that at one point, Meyers isolated and interrogated another inmate, who she thought was having a romantic relationship with the victim.

The Attorney General’s Office announced Meyers was given a two-year suspended sentence with three years of probation. As part of her plea, she also agreed to resign from her position with the DPSCS.

“Employee misconduct within the correctional system not only undermines integrity and trust in the system, but it also places the welfare of the incarcerated individuals and officers at risk,” said Attorney General Brown, in a news release. “We are committed to continuing our partnership with DPSCS to investigate and prosecute important cases of DPSCS employee misconduct and work to create a safer environment in Maryland correctional facilities.”

“The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services treats investigating all allegations of staff misconduct and corruption as a priority. These actions violate the public trust and jeopardize the safety and security of our institutions, staff and incarcerated community,” said DPSCS Secretary Carolyn Scruggs, in a news release. “Upon learning of these allegations, the DPSCS Special Investigations Section immediately initiated a criminal investigation into this matter, which ultimately led to the criminal charging of former staff member Myers. I appreciate the diligent work of the investigative team and the partnership of the Office of the Attorney General in the successful prosecution of this case.”
