OLATHE, Kan. — A software system that processes payments for the Johnson County Parks and Recreation District experienced an outage and overcharged people.

Some victims weren’t able to access hundreds of dollars for days. Johnson County Parks and Rec now says the issue is mostly resolved.

Johnson County Parks and Rec tell FOX4 about 1,100 people, that they know of, have been impacted.

Lynn Parkhurst’s children are part of more than 10,000 kids involved in summer camp programs this year with the Johnson County Parks and Recreation District. She’s grateful for the services JCPRD provides.

JCPRD said last Friday, some families who are signed up for recurring payments saw several extra charges.

“We got an email pretty quickly, after that, I felt like, saying what was going on and they were looking into it,” Parkhurst said.

Kellen Jenkins with JCPRD said they were informed last Friday their registration software Active Net had an outage.

As a result, he said they know about 1,100 customers impacted by the issues.

Parkhurst spotted four pending charges for $150.

“I do feel sorry for those that maybe can’t afford to have an extra three or four hundred just pending out of their bank account, but I know that it wasn’t JCPRD’s fault,” Parkhurst said.

Jenkins said they’ve been in communication with Active Net about the issue. They said it’s mostly resolved.

“The vast majority of those charges never went through, the extra charges never went through. So, those funds never left peoples bank accounts,” Jenkins said. “Now, unfortunately due to different financial institutions and how they handle fraud and that sort of thing. Some people may have experienced a freeze on their account, which we feel terrible about.”

He said it looks like the issue sits with Active Net’s payment processor. He said at this time, it’s unclear if this was related to the Global tech outage.

Jenkins said in the coming days, people should see those extra charges drop off their statements. Parkhurst has already seen her extra pending charges disappear.

Jenkins doesn’t anticipate issues with recurring payments this Friday.

“Our message is that we hear you. It’s an incredibly frustrating thing,” Jenkins said. ‘Unfortunately, these things happen with technology, occasionally, but rest assured we are doing everything we can to resolve it as quickly as possible.”

He encourages anyone who has received a charge that they don’t think is correct to reach out.
