Sacramento County confirms another heat-related death at tail end of record-breaking stretch

A Sacramento man died of heatstroke earlier this month, the second confirmed heat-related death in Sacramento County this year.

Albert G. Edadiz, 77, died July 12 at the UC Davis Medical Center after being “hospitalized for an extended period,” according to a Sacramento County news release, which noted the man “was not unhoused at the time of his death.”

Edadiz’s death occurred at the tail end of the hottest 20-day stretch on record in Sacramento .

Edadiz first went to the hospital July 3 for heat-related symptoms, county spokesperson Kim Nava said in an emailed response. Sacramento reached a high of 108 degrees that day, according to the National Weather Service.

The coroner’s office did not conduct a post-mortem examination because of the extended hospital stay.

Edadiz’s death came less than a week after the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office confirmed 58-year-old Kevin Gerhardt died of heatstroke in his trailer in North Sacramento. The city reached 106 degrees that day.

Another person, Steven Jerome “Snoop” Easley, who was homeless, died in his tent on July 4, according to previous Bee reporting. The coroner’s office has not released Easley’s cause of death as of Tuesday. The city hit 109 degrees on the holiday.
