WASHINGTON — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced Tuesday it will provide federal disaster assistance to counties in southern Missouri that were hit by tornadoes, floods and severe storms from May 19-27, 2024.

The assistance, approved by President Joe Biden, will provide federal funding to affected residents in Barry, Butler, Carter, Howell, New Madrid, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard and Texas counties.

The funding from FEMA can go to home repair grants, temporary housing grants, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help individuals and businesses recover in affected counties.

State government, certain local governments and some private nonprofit organizations can use federal funding on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and to help repair or replace facilities damaged by severe storms in Barry, Bollinger, Butler, Carter, Howell, Madison, McDonald, New Madrid, Oregon, Reynolds, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard and Texas counties.

Federal funding can also be used for statewide hazard mitigation measures on a cost-sharing basis.
