    Happening this week in and around Cecil County:

    Elkton Alliance is taking applications for vendors for its Kick Off Car Show and Fall Fest to be held Sept. 13 and 14.

    The Kick Off Car Show happens Sept. 13 from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. The next day from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. is the Fall Fest.

    For both events, Main and Howard Streets will be closed to vehicle traffic so visitors can stroll the downtown and enjoys music, food, activities and more. Vendors interested in taking part should go to https://www.elktonalliance.org/events .

    Oxford’s Aug. 2 First Friday will celebrate agriculture and farmers with a Hometown Harvest and Tractor Parade.

    Oxford Mainstreet is looking for vintage tractors to take part in a parade that will travel two miles through downtown. Registration closes July 29. Register your tractor at https://tinyurl.com/hxu6cexm .

    North East Chamber of Commerce has received its first load of commemorative benches, which are being installed by residents of The Dexter House.

    The blue and red benches will be available for visitors to take a break on their downtown stroll. Businesses, individuals and organizations can still get a bench as this is an ongoing chamber fundraiser. Each bench comes with a customized plaque.     Buildings in Cecil County 35,000 square feet or larger will have to start reporting their efforts to achieve net zero direct greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 in keeping with state and federal guidelines.

    In response, the Maryland Department of the Environment has a series of virtual webinars scheduled to help businesses formulate plans to that end.

    “We are serious about meeting our climate goals, and decarbonizing large buildings is a key piece of the plan to do that,” said Maryland Department of the Environment Secretary Serena McIlwain. “We are all in this effort together, and we are here to support building owners and landlords in meeting the goals for large buildings. Energy-efficient buildings are good for the planet, but they are also good for the health of the people who live and work inside of them.”

    Sessions will be held from 7 until 8 p.m. Aug. 6, 13 and 22 and from 1 until 2 p.m. Sept. 10. This is a free seminar but pre-registration is required. Registration is available at https://tinyurl.com/mwt8umzk .

    Some of the employees of ChristianaCare in Cecil County and Delaware got a pay raise this week, above the federal minimum wage of $15.

    Starting minimum wage for ChristianaCare is now $16.50 per hour.

    Susquehanna Workforce Network and Cecil College are hosting a 2024 Trucking Career Fair Saturday Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Workforce Center, 1275 West Pulaski Highway in Elkton.

    The career fair is open to all who are interested in learning more about how to get into this industry or to improve your current trucking career.
