A new roundabout at the intersection of Range and Yankee roads will begin construction on July 29.

The St. Clair County Road Commission announced the construction in a news release Tuesday. M.L. Chartier Excavating Inc. has been hired as the contractor for the construction, which sit on the border of the city and St. Clair Township.

"Traffic will be maintained within the construction zone, including to homes and businesses. Local residents and emergency vehicles will have access to local properties throughout the entire project. Local residents are encouraged to plan for delays due to construction. We request your cooperation and patience," the road commission said in a statement.

Only southbound traffic will be able to travel on Range Road between Yankee Road and Brown Street, while northbound traffic will be redirected to M-29 leading to Davis Road. Trucks will also have to take a detour through M-29 via Fred Moore Highway and Clinton Ave.

The construction is being funded by the St. Clair County Road Commission, the State of Michigan and Federal Highway Administration. It's expected to cost an estimated $1,043,000.

Construction of the Yankee Road portion is expected to take three weeks, during which the western portion will be closed. Those who typically use the road will have to take a detour through Davis Road, then South Bartlett Road and onto Bowman Road.

The construction is expected to last until September, though the news release states that could change based on weather and the contractor's schedule.
