Lunchbox Admits How He Handles Finances With His Wife

A listener called in needing financial advice with her new boyfriend that makes less money than her and wanted to know how Lunchbox and his wife handle finances.

He shared that they do it by percentage. When they go out to dinner, most of the time he pays for everyone, but every now and then she’ll pay the bill. For groceries they split it 60% and 40%, on the electric bill they split it 70% and 30%. Since the bill is different every time, they break down the percentage number every time. When either of them pays 100% for something, they make a joint payment.

Lunchbox and his wife sit down for an hour and go over bills once a month. He shared paying 50/50 is tough if the other person is making a lot more than them because there will be resentment and they won’t be able to keep up with the other person's lifestyle. They set these rules in the beginning of their marriage when they had a conversation on how much they make and figured out he earns more than her, so he pays for a higher percentage.
