Newham imam violently attacked in Al Karam Mosque by 'man who claimed he was there to pray'

An imam was “violently attacked” by a man who allegedly talked his way into an east London mosque by pretending he wanted to pray.

Security has been significantly tightened at the Al Karam Mosque in Newham and police officers will maintain a “high visibility presence” following the assault in the early hours of July 22.

The man entered the mosque at about 5.30am, allegedly with a concealed lock knife, claiming he was there to pray. When inside he launched himself at Mansoor Mahmood.

In a statement, a spokesman for the Al-Karam Mosque said: “Demonstrating remarkable courage, our Imam defended himself until police arrived and apprehended the attacker.

“We are profoundly grateful that our Imam survived this horrific incident, and we commend the swift response of the police.

“We urge our congregation to support and adhere to the enhanced security measures being implemented, including the regulated opening and closing of the mosque during prayer times.”

Plaistow councillor John Morris said: "I'm deeply shocked by this appalling attack on one of our religious communities.

“My thoughts are with the Al-Karam Mosque's courageous Imam and congregation.”

Chief Inspector Sarah Jackson, who leads Newham's neighbourhoods policing teams, said local faith officers had been dispatched to the mosque. “I know that this is an alarming incident,” she said. “We we are treating it with the utmost seriousness.

"Local faith officers have visited the mosque to meet those directly impacted. We are in touch with other partners to provide wider reassurance.

"Officers are also providing a high visibility presence at the mosque for Friday prayers and I would encourage anyone who has any concerns to speak to them.”

“Police were called at about 5.30am on Monday, July 22 following reports that a man had been assaulted at a mosque on Katherine Road, E7. The man was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.

“This matter is not being treated as a hate crime but as an isolated incident.”

Motin Jaman, 32, has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon and assault by beating. He is due to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
