Sweet Petites KC closes River Market storefront for safety concerns

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sweet Petites KC , a local bakery dedicated to making sweet treats for private events and special occasions, is closing its River Market storefront after serving the community for over five years.
The small business started as a self-taught hobby and fun pastime for owner and operator Lindsay Goff . Within no time, it developed into a full-fledged business with custom orders for parties, showers, weddings and special events of all kinds.
However, with the weight of being a busy wife, a mother of three and a business owner, Goff has decided to close her brick-and-mortar storefront due to personal, professional and safety reasons.
In a statement posted to the Sweet Petites KC Instagram and the bakery’s online blog Wednesday morning, Goff wrote, “After much thought and with a bit of a heavy heart, I am announcing I have made the difficult decision to close Sweet Petites KC storefront.”
She continued, “While I am proud of what I’ve created with Sweet Petites, I have not been immune to the difficulties of running a small business, both as a busy wife and mother of three and a business owner fighting a town that seems, at times, determined to create barriers that prevent small businesses from thriving.”
Goff explained that many of the difficulties regarding her small business fall heavily on the safety and convenience of both the staff and the customers. Specifically, she noted that the River Market itself has failing security operations and little safe parking for workers.
“The complete lack of security combined with an untenable parking arrangement in the River Market has created an environment that I no longer feel is appropriate for employees or customers,” Goff said.
