A big retail chain is shutting down stores all across Maryland

Big Lots is making some tough decisions, and Maryland is feeling the impact. The popular retail chain has just announced the closure of up to 40 locations nationwide, with three of those closures happening right here in Maryland.

Here’s the rundown on which Maryland stores are shutting their doors:

• 3331 Corridor Marketplace, Laurel
• 21800 N Shangri La Dr, Lexington Park
• 11989 Reisterstown Rd, Reisterstown

The Reisterstown store, located at the Reisterstown Shopping Center, will be closing soon, as confirmed by the company’s website. Don’t worry if you’re in Baltimore, though; other Big Lots stores in the area aren’t affected by this round of closures.

Big Lots is offering up to 20% off at these closing locations to help ease the blow for shoppers. Still, the news has left many feeling disappointed. One Facebook user summed it up well: “This sucks.” Another added, “I’m disappointed. I find great stuff there, especially seasonal items, and the staff is always friendly and helpful.”

However, not all items are discounted. Some shoppers have pointed out that food isn’t on sale, and discounts on other items range from just 5% to 10%. It’s a bit of a mixed bag.

This closure news comes hot on the heels of Big Lots admitting that it faces a significant challenge, with up to 40 stores potentially closing by the end of 2024. The company has also struggled with a substantial default on a 2022 loan, which has cast doubt on its financial stability.

The retailer’s recent regulatory filings reveal that it’s grappling with “244 underperforming store locations” as of the first quarter of 2024. It’s a tough time for Big Lots and its loyal customers.
